Who's E.M.? He spelled Eucalyptus wrong.
Ribbons, you might be pleased to hear that I saw a liscence plate on a truck. Not about that part but what was written on it: Rosie Cotton Is Hot!
Anyways, Megan, we have finals next week, I joined a classical music band and will be the lead celloist. We are called the 'Wandering Dust Mites'. There is a play at school - 'Emma' - and I'm part of the set design which so far doesn't really rock. Why does Kevin dress like What's-His-Name from the Pirates of the Carribean? Also, there is a huge assignment in English class. We have to write a novella by next month and it has to have a teddy bear somewhere in it. Joel likes Ariel and follows her around. We have scratchboards in art which really sucks cuz I don't like 'em and would rather sketch or paint. The sky is falling and I like cheese.
That's pretty much all that's going on in my life. I like the simple life - it's a lot easer to organize (not that I do that!).
Cool @ the whole suit and cake and band deal Michael.
Does anyone know what 'lylas' means?
Hope things are going well for ya Megan, una grand besa and all that.

rosie, i really need your help, or anyone else in latin. i forgot my book and it would be so great if someone could tell me what the sentences were

At Wednesday, January 18, 2006 9:17:00 pm, Blogger Aletheia said...

I vote that it is Dr. Rogland. And that's exciting about our tests if it is!
The quote is from NIV.
Last six lines (though you could look them up, Sean, that's what the internet is really really good for)
Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain,
But am betrothed unto your enemy.
Divorce me, untie or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthral me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.
Michael, Latin sentences are:
1. The pretty girl is pleasing to herself but not to us.
2. Many ancient tribes adored the sun and the moon and the stars.
3. We cannot attack Rome's enemies because we do not have the power.
4. They praise the brave soldier, but he does not praise himself.
5. Did not a multitude of brave soldiers give their lives for you and for me and for all theinhabitants of our fatherland?

Eucalyptus Man, if you are Dr. Rogland, I went to Wright Park today and the wattle tree is now a stand for a pink flower in a pot. The lady there was helpful though and showed me a picture of it and gave me the information and the Japanese Sago was hard to find.
Michael, if that is Dr. Rogland then KUDOS! And the novella, 'Wandering Dust Mites' and the sky falling is just a part of my imaginary world in my imaginary head that's inside of my head.

We should totally do something all together. We haven't for awhile. We should do something crazy, like going swimming in the ocean or giving light-up pens to gas station employees or going caroling in February.

At Sunday, January 22, 2006 9:29:00 pm, Blogger cute_starfish said...

Are the last two lines of this ones we have to memorize because I don't remember memorizing them.

Leave me, O Love which reachest but to dust,
And thou my mind aspire to higher things;
Grow rich in that which never takenth rust;
Whatever fades but fading pleasure brings.

Draw in thy beams, and humble all thy might
To that sweet yoke where lasting freedoms be;
Which breaks the clouds and opens forth the light,
The doth both shine and gives us sight to see.

O take fast hold; let that light be thy guide
In this small course which birth draws out to
death,
And think how evil becometh him slide,
Who seek heav'n, and comes out of heav'nly breath.
Then farewell world; thy uttermost I see;
Eternal Love, maintain thy life in me.

At Sunday, January 22, 2006 9:30:00 pm, Blogger cute_starfish said...

We should Aletheia. I opt for the caroling idea - sounds fun. =)

I mean; did we memorize this?

O take fast hold; let that light be thy guide
In this small course which birth draws out to

Who seek heav'n, and comes out of heav'nly breath.
Then farewell world; thy uttermost I see;
Eternal Love, maintain thy life in me.

BOOK I

Of man's first disobedience, and the fruit
Of that forbidden tree whose mortal taste
Brought death into the World, and all our woe,
With loss of Eden, till one greater Man
Restore us, and regain the blissful seat,
Sing, Heavenly Muse...
I thence
Invoke thy aid to my adventurous song,
That with no middle flight intends to soar
Above the Aonian mount, while it pursues
Things unattempted yet in prose or ryhme.
And chiefly Though, O Spirit, that dost prefer
Before all temples the upright heart and pure,
Instruct me, for Thou know'st Thou from the first
Wast present, and, with thy mighty wings outspread,
Dovelike sat'st brooding on the vast Abyss,
And mad'st is pregnant: what in me is dark
Illumine, what is low raise and support;
That, to the height of this great argument,
I may assert Eternal Providence,

And it goes on but I don't know what we were supposed to memorize and do we have to do those questions in the back and how many?

Questions:
From the introduction in the book:
1. What does medif ref mean?
2. Milton's great work is considered the great English epic. What are the characteristics of an epic?
3. This epic is considered to be one lengthy argument. For what is he arguing? Site the line or lines that show the object of his argument.
From the reading:
4. What does Milton imply when he wrote "intends to soar above the Aonean mount"?
5. Line 79 begins an extended conversation between what two people/beings?
6. These speakers say many things about the conflict that led to their "steepling plunge." In this conversation, they reveal many misconceptions about God's power, His motives, and His prerogatives, showing that they think they had God on the ropes, so to speak, and that it was actually touch-and-go whether God would win, or whether they would. Find as many of these as you can and explain what they are implying in the phrases. Example: Statement: "Nor what the potent victor in his rage can else inflict, do I repent or change." Implication: "Rage" implies God was out of control. "Inflict" sounds like God was being mean.

Michelle, if you can tell us the line numbers we're supposed to read, I think we can find it online (I have a copy of it at my house; don't know if anybody else might). And if you feel like typing a whole bunch, maybe you can type out the introduction the textbook gives? We're not gonna find that online. Otherwise, we can do it in the morning.
OK, lemme run get the memorization...

Speechless he stood and pale, till thus at length
First to himself he inward silence broke:
"O fairest of creation, last and best,
Of all God's works, creature in whom excelled
Whatever can to sight or thought be formed,
Holy, divine, good, amiable, or sweet!
How are thou lost, how on a sudden lost,
Defaced, deflow'red, and now to death devote!
